Key Tips on How to Get the Job You Want

You worked plenty hard to get where you are; don’t stop now.  The gap between where you are and where you want to be is now only about 2% of the total effort you’ve put forth so far.

Turn it all on, full blast.

Here are some classic skills that’ll set you above the rest as you get you more than just the job you need: it’ll be the position you want.

You’ve seen in your clinical rotations where the best people are.  Make the decision you want to join them; they’re the ones that will make you more accountable, more disciplined, and the best you can ever be.  Make this your ultimate goal; anything else is going to be a stepping stone, and stepping stones are fine.  While you;re still in school, present yourself to these people as if you were applying for the job: be early, stay focused, and offer your interest in learning and offer to help at every turn.  Stay a few minutes later and clean up.  And before you leave, ask, “Before I go, is there anything I can do for you?”

When looking for a job, make certain you make your contacts in person.  People do business with the people they know.  Don;t just apply in the middle of the morning schedule, show up near lunch time and offer to buy someone lunch, just for the chance to pick their brain.  If there’s not a position there, they will likely know others who might be open to you.  Remember, you;re in the people business.  People like to work with people persons.

Overdress, whether it’s your personal style or not.  And don;t over-present present yourself; you’re already competent; you can now afford to be comfortable with who you are, and that’s plenty special.  Remember, we all need you in the field, and you;re going to be welcome nearly everywhere.  We’re glad you came to see us.

Express your gratitude, even for a temporary no answer.  Always tell everyone, “Thank you for being here”: at the start of the conversation, and at the end.  And before you leave, ask, “Is there anything I can do for you before I go?”  These two thing alone will set you apart in their memory from nearly everyone they’ve ever met.

Finally, if you’ve found the perfect job, the one you have to have, seal the interview with this offer: “The first week’s on me.  Try me out for a week, and if it works, hire me.  If not, it will have cost you nothing.”  If there’s a gap in your talents, make them this offer: exchange your time commitment with them for their sponsorship of your training expense; download our proposed contract agreement for just such an offer.
Offer a firm handshake all the while looking them in the eye, have a ready smile, and clean shoes.  People notice both ends.

And if you need more resources, just contact us: we’ve got a huge library of personal development reference titles to help you be your best and stay at the top of your personal contribution.
