KMA Philosophy

For over twenty five years people have constantly remarked that our approach to the science and application of this technology is refreshingly unlike anything they’ve ever seen.  Without being overly self serving let me tell you why I think this is.

I learned a long time ago that adults--particularly adult professionals--want three things out of life: recognition, security, and change. It is on these three points that our approach to learning rests:

Recognition: respect for themselves, their uniqueness and all that they are, have done and will do.

Security: a sense of personal safety and comfort while alone in an environment of uncertainty, challenge and potential embarrassment.

Change: the exciting promise of something new and all the things it might bring.

I don't believe it is possible to teach anyone anything at all unless you first--and always--address these needs for each and every person in the room, each and every time... without exception or excuse. I've seen what happens elsewhere when the teacher chooses to ignore them. It is my personal disappointment for such a style, particularly within our profession, that keeps us coming back to the classroom day after day.

This philosophy is more than just a personal opinion, it is the place inside from where we come. It is what has guided and sustained all here for a quarter century.

If you're looking for some unique difference that may set us apart from our countless colleagues, some element which might connect with you a little better, this is it. I believe that you will find a permanent and lasting value in it; the tiny, but definite sort of thing that will last you a lifetime.

Certainly we're not the only dedicated and competent teachers in medicine, and: when you find people who will connect with you and help you, learn from them. But if ever you sense that this spirit is missing, walk away... and keep looking until you do.

You are much too important for anything less.
